Abstract: The photoionization origin of the line emission of the broad-line region (BLR) in active galactic nuclei suggests that there must be correlations between line properties (such as line flux, width, equivalent width, line flux ratios, etc.) and continuum properties (flux, spectral slope). I briefly describe observed correlations, including intrinsic correlations for a single object as it varies in flux, and global correlations for a sample of objects. Observed correlations between broad-line properties and continuum properties verify the photoionization mechanism of the gas emission, the link between the optical/ultraviolet and ionizing continuum, and indicate the nature of BLR.
