Abstract: How our ideas about the nature of the p-mode oscillations have evolved will be discussed first. In the beginning, two basic models were considered: the effect of the acoustic cutoff frequency on mode excitation and propagation and the existence of a resonant cavity. The issue with the latter was the location of the cavity. Next the evolution of our ideas on the excitation of the modes will be described. Initially, the oscillations were thought to be driven by convection. Then the possibility of overstability was explored. Now we are back to the initial idea of stochastic excitation by convective turbulence.
