Abstract: We will present contemporaneous multiwavelength observations of the TeV sources Markarian 421 and Markarian 501 with particular emphasis on observations taken in 1995 on Mrk 421 and in 1997 on Mrk 501. Both show strong correlations between the TeV gamma rays and lower energy photons, particularly in the soft to hard X-ray regime on time scales from days to hours. The correlations between the gamma rays and lower wavelengths and the extent of the emission from these objects to >10 TeV imply high Doppler factors and stringent limits on magnetic fields in the gamma ray production region. These results and their implications for BL Lac emission models will be discussed in the presentation.
