Abstract:	The Canadian Astronomy Data Centre (CADC) was established in 1986 to distribute HST data to the Canadian Astronomical Community. The initial software system used was the VMS-based Data Management Facility (DMF) from the Space Telescope Science Institute which included the archiving of data onto 12" WORM optical disks in its own format. In 1991, we began 2 projects which required the development of our own optical disk tools - the migration to UNIX and the archiving of other data onto optical disk, in particular that of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. This paper describes tools developed at the CADC for accessing the WORM optical disks in the DMF format. These range from low-level block access through to UNIX-like reading and writing tools through to the retrieval system used to process user requests for offline data.
