Recent distance determinations of the Virgo cluster are reviewed which agree so well that a realistic value seems at hand. The five methods employed to make these independent determinations, which utilize globular clusters, novae, supernovae, the D-sigma correlation between the diameter and the aperture-dependent velocity dispersion for elliptical galaxies, and the 21-cm line widths-magnitude relation are described, and the values obtained are given. It is shown how previous discrepancies of the blue and/or infrared Tully-Fisher relation are due to selection effects. Possible sources of systematic error are discussed. |
