		| Abstract: |
Factors affecting the performance of multiple-object fiber-fed astronomical spectrometers and the design tradeoffs applicable to the construction of these spectrometers are discussed. Consideration is given to the system configuration of a fiber-fed multiple-object spectrophotometer (MOS) and the plug-board and robot systems, the position of the MOS on the telescope, the optimum working f ratio, the design of the automatic positioner, and the optimum number of fibers. A summary of the characteristics of Argus, the Cerro Tololo's multiple object spectrograph, is presented as an example of the implications of the factors involved in the design tradeoffs. |
