		| Abstract: |
The Herschel Reference Survey (HRS) is a volume limited sample of
323 nearby galaxies. The survey has observed each galaxy at 250, 350
and 500 μ m and will measure the emission from the cold dust
in galaxies. The HRS is approximately centred on the Virgo cluster
and covers a range of environments. With the wealth of ancillary
data in this region the HRS will be a useful legacy for
understanding both the local and distant universe. This talk reviews
some of the results from the Science Demonstration Phase (SDP) which
include the spatial distribution of dust in spiral galaxies, maps of
the interstellar medium, observations of the disturbed galaxy
NGC 4338 and the dust morphology of the elliptical galaxy M 86. |
