| Abstract: |
We show that banded toroidal fields in the tachoclines of the Sun and other stars should be unstable to 3-D axisymmetric overturning modes if the peak toroidal field is ∼100 kG or more. This instability should fragment and limit the amplitude of toroidal fields in tachoclines. |
