		NASA is currently carrying out studies on the prospect of space-based far-infrared interferometry. Two mission concepts, that of the Space Infrared Interferometric Telescope (SPIRIT), which is a 30-m baseline single-structure space interferometer planned for launch before 2010, and the Submillimeter Probe of the Evolution of Cosmic Structure (SPECS), which is a separate spacecraft interferometer with baseline up to one kilometer planned for the 2013-2020 time frame, have been proposed by the NASA GSFC/NASA JPL consortium. Both interferometers are background-limited Michelson type imaging and spectral interferometers operating in the wavelength range of 40-500 micron. We discuss the implication of space-based far-infrared interferometry to the study of the formation and evolution of galaxies in the early universe. |
