		Collisions of comparable mass galaxies have a significant effect upon the subsequent large-scale morphology and star formation rate in disk galaxies. Although such collisions are rare in the local universe, there are a few spectacular examples that provide nearby laboratories for studying phenomena that were once much more common. Collisions involving gas-rich disk galaxies can induce rapid and extensive star formation in regions of high gas density, produced where gas streams collide. Comparisons between multi-wavelength observations of such galaxies and appropriate 3-D numerical simulations of galaxy collisions can be used to demonstrate the sequencing of starbursts. |
