		| Abstract: |
Using the new sub-mm array camera SCUBA on the 15-m JCMT it is now possible to conduct unbiased sub-mm selected surveys and quantify the amount of star-formation activity in the young Universe by observing directly the rest-frame FIR emission from dust in high-redshift galaxies. I will briefy review the importance of millimetre and submillimetre cosmology, and present a summary of results from existing recent blank-field 850um surveys that cover a range of complementary depths and areas. The difficulties in interpreting the existing submm data will be described and, given this experience, I will concentrate on the required capabilities of future telescopes and instruments operating at mm and submm wavelengths. |
