Abstract: Described is a method to derive the flat field response of an imaging instrument from observations of a nonuniform extended target which has an unknown surface brightness distribution. The method is based on obtaining overlapping exposures of the target using a carefully planned set of offsets so that the underlying surface brightness distribution of the target may be derived. This method has successfully been used to derive UV flat fields for the Faint Object Camera on the Hubble Space Telescope using observations of the inner region of the Orion Nebula.
