Abstract: A clumpy maser model can naturally explain the observations of apparently compact and diffuse phases in OH megamaser emission. This model is used to explain in detail the maser observations of the luminous IR galaxy III Zw 35, where a clear rotating maser ring has been observed. The relationship between the maser and radio continuum structures suggests an inwardly propagating region of star formation. The importance of clumping for megamasers has not yet been fully appreciated and further work will be useful to constrain the cloud size distribution in starburst regions.
