Abstract: From Lynga's catalog (1981) we have selected a sample of 82 open clusters with determined distances and younger than 10 exp 7 years. Our basic idea is to use this sample as a discrete set of explorations of the variable Z in the (X,Y) plane in order to estimate the function Z(X Y) in the whole area. To attack this problem we apply mathematical tools mainly developed by the geostatisticians. The dominant feature present in this view is an extended and deep elliptical depression in the third quadrant. A clear relation between large regions of star-forming activity and the Z-structure of the Galactic plane is apparent from this study.
