Abstract: The paper deals with mass determination for variable stars and concentrates on selected problems related to simple radial oscillators in the Cepheid instability strip. The classical Cepheids are emphasized, and realistic uncertainties in six types of Cepheids masses are considered, as well as observational data expected in a few years. A contrasting case of the RR Lyrae stars and type Cepheids is discussed, and the uncertainty in mass determinations for double-mode RR Lyrae variables is estimated. The physical parameters of delta Scuti and SX Phoenicis variables are outlined. The study predicts rapid improvements in the determination of masses and other physical properties for variable stars.
