Abstract: A method of directly determining the distance to a nova which has a shell around it is described. If the expansion velocity of the shell is known and if it is assumed that the shells are round and are now and have been expanding with a constant velocity since the initial explosion, it is possible to determine the distance to the nova via an expansion parallax. Some property of the nova, preferably involving the period near maximum light when the object is brightest, and which behaves predictably is used to find the distance with a suitably small uncertainty. The prospects for future use of the method are considered and the validity of its assumptions is examined.
