Abstract: A preliminary reduction of 70 blue plates of M33, obtained at the 182-cm telescope of Asiago Observatory, has been used to derive the distance modulus (m-M)M33 = 24.80 + or - 0.3 and to give a quantitative estimate of nova rate, R(M33) = 4 + or - 2 novae/yr. Also provided is an estimate of the Galactic nova production and a comparison of the nova rates occurring in the spiral galaxies M31 and M33 and in the giant elliptical galaxies in Virgo.
