Abstract: Accurate calibration of photometry from ground based telescopes is always a challenge. It is particularly so for all-sky surveys performed with wide field instruments over a wide range of observing conditions. The LSST is one such survey with particularly demanding requirements on photometric accuracy and precision, and forms the context for this paper. We discuss some statistical issues involved in photometric calibration, and in particular focus on methods that attempt to optimally use all available information to determine the atmospheric extinction. These methods are promising, but are in an early phase of development. We cannot yet be confident that they will deliver the performance that the LSST requires.
