Abstract: As astronomical data archives advance, scientists have a plethora of diverse resources for research at their fingertips. Because these archives use standardized protocols, they can be useful for wider audiences through appropriate tools. In the past, software utilizing data for educational purposes has been focused on smaller data holdings and catalogs. Now many educational programs for pre-college venues, informal science activities, and college level courses are well positioned to make use of the larger data sets resulting from sky surveys, research campaigns, and the stores from astronomical telescopes. This paper will present examples of software services and tools poised to use these resources, and will concentrate especially on opportunities presented by the National Virtual Observatory.
