Abstract: SIMBAD (Set of Identification, Measurements, and Bibliography for Astronomical Data), which began as the Catalogue of Stallar Identifications in 1971, is one of the essential elements of the astronomical bibliographic information network. This paper describes how SIMBAD has been built and is maintained, in terms of software and content, its evolution in time and its perspectives, and the complementarity with the other CDS services. Critical elements for long term sustainability are also discussed.
