Abstract: A subjective review on the question of the geometry of mass distribution in galaxies, based on the current assessments of their physical extent. I provide the definition and illustration of the relevance of the shapes and flattening of the mass distribution in galaxies. Then, I present the observational results on the shape of galaxies as traced by their stars, and the results on the shapes of dark matter halos from cosmological simulations. Finally these results are put into perspective and compared with the constraints on the shape of the mass distribution in the Milky Way galaxy and external galaxies from several independent observational techniques.
