Abstract: AstroGrid is a project aimed at building a data-grid for UK astronomy, which will form the UK contribution to a global Virtual Observatory (VO). The first public release already delivers a functional system capable of accessing a large set of resources: query and retrieval of catalogues with cross match capabilities as well as image archive query, retrieval and analysis. Access to wide imaging surveys like the Wide Field Survey, Sloan Digital Sky Survey, 2MASS and Spitzer Wide Area Infrared Extragalactic Survey are already possible to cite a few.
In this paper we describe how to use AstroGrid and other VO tools to search for rare and high redshift objects, stressing the importance of the VO to ease and speed up the access to a variety of multiwavelength surveys. Different tools allow us to detect objects in images retrieved from different archives, federate the catalogues and determine photometric redshifts.
