Abstract: It has been shown (Andretta & Giampapa 1995) that the two He I triplet lines at 1.083 μm and 587.6 nm, respectively, can be utilized to infer the area coverage of active (plage-like) regions on stellar surfaces by exploiting their different responses to chromospheric heating. This kind of information, which is very difficult to obtain through other methods, can serve as a fundamental constraint for the development of stellar dynamo theory.  We discuss the application and limitations of this approach to the interpretation of spatially resolved solar data along with some preliminary stellar observations.
