Abstract: Formally it may not be possible to discriminate between true variability of a given pulsation mode on the one hand, and beating between two or more modes with close frequencies. In a number of sdBV stars dramatic changes over short timescales in the overall power content of oscillations, and other evidence, favour the former explanation. Two statistical procedures are discussed: testing for stochastic versus deterministic oscillations, and testing for amplitude variability versus constant amplitudes, at a fixed frequency.
