Abstract: Claudio Monteverdi appears as the key personality of the music in Galileo's time. His revolution in format and function of the musical language–from an essentially edonistic creation of purely sonorous images to a musical language consciously “expressive” of the content of the words on which it is based–is similar in character to the influential innovations in scientific thinking operated by Galileo.
