Abstract: Most galaxies are multicomponent stellar systems, comprising a spheroid and disk with largely independent origins. Separating the properties of these components can put powerful constraints on models of galaxy formation. However, current decomposition methods are not sufficiently developed for routine use. We identify areas where substantial improvements may be made, including fully utilizing multiband imaging, and incorporating non-parametric components. These issues will be addressed by the MegaMorph project, which aims to produce a tool for robustly and accurately measuring galaxy components in large surveys.
