Abstract: We present high-dispersion spectra in the UV (HST/STIS) and far-UV (FUSE), obtained toward stars in the diffuse Galactic ISM. This dataset allows us to probe for the first time the phosphorus gas phase abundance in the distant ISM at an average distance of 2600 pc. Along with a compilation of published spectra within the Local ISM, these new measurements show that phosphorus is essentially undepleted inside small diffuse clouds (N(H I) < 20.5, E(B-V)<0.3) with { log (P/H) } = −6.6. We find that P/O is relatively constant for a wide range of metallicity in diffuse media and might be used as a fiducial for oxygen for future extra-galactic works.
