Abstract: For those red giants and supergiants which do not exhibit an optically thick circumstellar dust shell, the observation of massive stellar winds remains an outstanding problem. The wind-driving mechanism, as well as many wind characteristics through the wind-acceleration region, are unknown. We discuss the use of eclipsing binary systems to analyze the important regions at the base of the outflow, with reference to work we have carried out on a small sample of red giants in symbiotic binary systems.
