Abstract: In the last few years, negatively charged molecular ions (anions) have been detected in a variety of sources in the interstellar medium as well as in the circumstellar shell of the AGB star IRC+10216. In this paper, we discuss the chemistry that forms and destroys these species, the inclusion of anions into chemical models, and what the comparison of model and observational results tells us.
