Abstract: The chemistry and excitation conditions of the molecular gas in the central ~1kpc of active galaxies appear to be strongly dependent on the type of activity, i.e., whether it is in form of extreme star formation (SB) and/or an accreting supermassive black hole (AGN). We present a multiple line and transition study of several nearby active galaxies with SB and/or AGN signatures (including M82, NGC6946, NGC1068, and NGC6951) that has been carried out with single-dish (IRAM 30m) and interferometric (SMA, IRAM) instruments. A special focus will be thereby given to the differences between the two activity types and the evolutionary stage of the activity as seen through CO, HCN and HCO+.
