Abstract: The TeV BL Lac object Markarian 501 is a complex, core dominated radio source. We used VSOP data to discuss some of its parsec scale properties in Giroletti et al. (2004). The good resolution and sensitivity of VSOP at 1.6 GHz allow us to reveal a limb brightening in the parsec scale jet, which can be interpreted as a signature of a dual velocity structure. We further observed Mrk 501 with the Global millimeter VLBI array at 86 GHz, achieving a resolution of a few hundreds Schwarzschild radii. We detected the nuclear emission and a short one-sided jet. We discuss the source properties at sub-mas resolution, the nuclear spectral index, the possible correlation between the radio and gamma emission, and the correlation from the sub-pc to the kpc scale structure. We anticipate how the VSOP2 mission, thanks to the high resolution and sensitivity, will enable us to improve our understanding of the complex nature of the jet of this TeV blazar.
