Abstract: I review recent hydrodynamical simulations of cluster formation and focus on the extent to which they are able to satisfy a number of observational constraints. These simulations have had considerable success in reproducing both the IMF and spatial location of stars in clusters. It is plausible that the inclusion of feedback in such simulations could also assist in remedying two notable shortcomings: i.e. the lack of any upper truncation in the IMF produced in the simulations and the over-prediction of the Galactic star formation rate given the mass of dense gas in the Galaxy. Considerably more work is required in this area before this hypothesis can be justified.
