Abstract: The potential for education and public outreach with the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) is as far reaching as the telescope itself. LSST data will be available to the public, giving anyone with a web browser a movie-like window on the Universe. Our goal is to provide access to the LSST database in an appropriate and usable format suited to broad audiences including the general public, formal education programs, informal learning centers, and citizen-scientists wishing to make a contribution to scientific research. Using the principles of Backward Design, described in Understanding by Design (Wiggins & McTighe 2005) we have begun to assess audience needs and conceptualize our Education and Public Outreach (EPO) program. By sharing our process and progress to date, the LSST EPO development team endeavors to demonstrate a structured approach from which other EPO programs can benefit.
