Abstract: Granulation, mesogranulation, supergranulation and giant cells are the four different characteristic scales of convection believed to exist on the Sun. Three of these, granulation, mesogranulation and supergranulation, have been clearly identified through ground and space based observations. There is no clear observational evidence for the existence of giant cells so far. In this paper, we propose a method of estimating various spatial scales available in a two dimensional data using generalised structure functions. We demonstrate the method through simulations and apply it to explore the spatial scales present in solar data obtained from Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO).
