Abstract: The properties of the US Bright Quasar Sample (UBQS) are reviewed and compared to those of other published, optically selected, bright (B < 17) quasar samples. Bright quasar samples are important for the contribution they make to our knowledge of the bright end of the quasar optical luminosity function at all redshifts. The present paper examines some of the characteristics and selection effects of these bright quasar samples to gain some insight into the potential accuracy of their contribution to a derivation of the optical luminosity function.
