Abstract: We have improved the upper limit estimate on the toroidal component of the magnetic field in NGC 4258 at a radius of 0.2 pc from 300 mG (the former limit) to 50 mG. Assuming thermal and magnetic pressure balance, we estimate the accretion rate to be dM/dt/α ≤10−3.5cosΘ−2 Msolaryr−1 (where α is the viscosity parameter and Θ the angle between our line-of-sight and the B field), which is much less than the predicted value of the standard ADAF model.
