Abstract: The hot cores that will become ultracompact HII regions are the main focus of this review. In particular, our present understanding of their temperature structure, spectral energy distributions, lack of radio continuum emission, association with outflows and accretion disks, and outflow properties (mass, velocity distribution, kinetic energy, etc.) are summarized. A possible mechanism to produce the massive outflows associated with massive protostars is suggested. The potential significance of the discovery of many hard X-ray sources in the W3 massive star formation complex, the possible role of hypercompact HII regions in the evolutionary sequence of massive stars, and the association of extended halos around UC HII regions are mentioned.
