Abstract: From the observed properties of the pulsar binary systems with long orbital periods (Porb >~100d) and the fact that obviously no X--ray outburst from the corresponding progenitor population of long--period X--ray transients has been observed so far, we derive a lower limit of <tq> >~1500yr for the duration of the quiescence of the accretion disc in such systems. As has been argued by Ritter & King (2001) this implies that the accretion efficiency of neutron stars in long--period X--ray transients must be extremely low, in fact too low to allow for the formation of a millisecond pulsar in binaries with Porb >~200d.
