Abstract: We have used HST WFPC2 observations of the inner 3 kpc of the interacting galaxy M51 in six broad bands covering the spectrum from 2200 Å to 9500 Å to study various aspects of star formation occurring in the central regions of M51. The images show the spectacular morphology of M51's innermost regions and spiral arm structure, reveal the presence of an unresolved nuclear source, and provide a number of independent evidences for a strong episode of star formation that occurred about 400 Myr ago, possibly triggered by the last close interaction with its companion NGC 5195.
