Abstract: Although they are a key element of the unified scheme for active galactic nuclei, we have only a crude idea of the physical structure of molecular tori and their formation and lifetimes. In addition the statistical foundation of the unified scheme remains weak. In this review I summarize the primary evidence which led to the rise of the unified scheme, describe the current state of knowledge, and outline ways of addressing the outstanding issues, particularly using infrared observations.
