Abstract: The HI distributions in spiral galaxies are often not axisymmetric, either morphologically or kinematically, perhaps as a result of non-axisymmetry in their gravitational potential. We use the HI velocity field in a number of spiral galaxies to estimate the lopsidedness in their potentials, and compare the results to those found from their HI distributions. We find that the potentials of the galaxies may be lopsided by about 5%. We also find that the observed morphological lopsidedness cannot be caused by the potential alone: other causes--e.g. infall, ejection, change of HI into other forms--must be equally important.
