Abstract: We have derived a new dwarf metallicity distribution, based on HIPPARCOS parallaxes and photometric metallicities. We show that: (1) Most previous metallicity distributions are biased against metal rich stars; (2) our distribution, corrected for biases, is centred on solar metallicity; (3) the percentage of `thick disk' metallicity stars ([Fe/H]<-0.5) is ~4%, compatible with other estimates of the local density of this population; (4) the observed distribution is very well fitted by a simple closed-Box model.
