Abstract: There is now a general consensus on a scenario for radio source evolution in which radio sources for most of their life dim in luminosity as they grow in size. We summarize our understanding of the arguments which have brought to such a scenario and comment on the extension of the evolution models to the very young phases, when the sources are expected to grow in an almost constant ambient density. We conclude that the models seem to fail at smaller linear sizes as they predict too few sources as compared to those which are found. We discuss some implications and alternatives.
