Abstract: We have used the Fundamental Plane relation to measure the evolution of the mass-to-light ratio of early-type galaxies out to z = 0.83. This evolution is equivalent to ``passive evolution''. The evolution is very slow, and consistent with a high formation redshift in an open universe. This measurement is the first step needed to convert luminosities and luminosity functions at high redshift into masses and mass functions.
