Abstract: He I 667.8 nm line profiles of the southern Be star w CMa were monitored with high spectral (60000) and temporal (typically 20 minutes) resolution during 6 nights of January 1996. Altogether 264 spectra were obtained. Photometric observations obtained between 1985 - 1996, including almost simultaneous uvby data, were also analyzed. Period analysis of the He I line gives P = 1.3699 day, which is the same period found in previous spectroscopic observations. The photometric amplitude at this period is insignificant, though in some seasons large random (0.1 mag) variations are present. The He I line profile variations were modeled as non-radial pulsations (NRP) and rotating photospheric spots. Neither model seems to account for the observations in a satisfactory way. One way of explaining the profile variations as well as the very low light amplitude is by a spot in which the macroturbulence is much higher, but which has a temperature close to that of the photosphere.
