Abstract: We review the physics that can be derived from line profile and photometric observations of pulsating stars. For most pulsating stars, the lack of mode identification is an obstacle in extracting astroseismological information. Simultaneous line profile and photometric observations provide the best solution. For the fainter stars the effect of the mode of pulsation on the amplitude and phase of the light variation at different wavelengths may be used. We review the use of these techniques in different types of pulsating star and discuss recent results arising from increased precision in high- dispersion spectroscopy. We discuss recent observational results and how they can be used to test our understanding of the driving mechanisms. Three new types of pulsating star have been discovered over the last few years. We discuss how they may be understood. Pulsating OB stars provide one of the best tests of the revised opacity data. We discuss how the various types of pulsating OB stars can be classified in terms of their observational and pulsational properties. We show how the structure of the b Cep instability strip provides an unexpected method of determining the ages of open clusters with greater accuracy, and independent of conventional isochrone fitting.
