Abstract: Changes which take place on different timescales occur in the primary light cycles of RR Lyrae stars. Two of these variations, those of the Blazhko effect and of long term period changes, have been known for years, but still pose theoretical problems. New observations of Blazhko effect stars will be presented, and the different ways in which the Blazhko phenomenon can affect the light curve will be discussed. The patterns of long term period changes in field and cluster RR Lyraes, and the extent to which evolution can or cannot explain them, will also be addressed.
