Abstract: Near-infrared observations of nearby molecular clouds have shown that embedded young stars are often spatially concentrated. These stellar groups or clusters are typically found in parsec-sized regions and may contain anywhere from a few stars to a thousand or more. I review the properties of embedded clusters, including their spatial distribution in the Galaxy and the type of stellar clusters that form most stars in our Galaxy. The potential for large scale surveys such as 2MASS (1-2μm) and GLIMPSE (3-8μm) to discover massive clusters is briefly discussed.
