Abstract: Quasar absorption line studies provide a means to observe the formation of galactic disks and halos directly. They complement the fossil record provided by the study of stellar populations in the Milky Way halo, discussed throughout this conference. After a review of what has been learned from quasar absorption line studies, a few new results are presented.
