Abstract: A three-dimensional model of the dust distribution in the Milky Way is presented based on FIR observations made by the COBE satellite, and used to construct an extinction model over the disk of the Galaxy. This model is an extension of that first presented by Drimmel & Spergel (2001). A new dust model is currently under construction which will include an eccentric molecular ring/central hole in the disk, and temperature gradients associated with the spiral arms. Description of the dust within a few kiloparsecs of the Sun, associated with the local Orion arm, is further constrained by recent observations of nearby H II regions.
